Mama Duomme's Story

The story of Nyirahakizimana Thacienne, also known as “Mama Duomme,” is one of hardship and sacrifice. Having had seven children, her family was once whole- living together. She raised two daughters to become fully grown and accomplished women and, with her husband, looked to raise their four (and soon five) sons. But, in 2013, just before the birth of her fifth son, Mama Duomme’s husband left with one of her sons. He claimed he would look for work in Uganda and promised to send money home. Not a dollar would be sent.

Since then, Mama Duomme has desperately worked to provide for her four sons who live with her. Now a single mother, she put the needs of her children and their education before herself. Mama Duomme turned to work as a cleaner or porter to pay her son’s school fees, but these jobs earned her as little as 10 cents per job. Eventually, she resorted to selling igwaga (banana beer) out of her house to provide for her family. Mama Duomme hated this; it kept drunk men in and around her home, but she knew she had to support her sons in any way she could.

Mama Duomme was able to find a more stable source of income through working for Inshuti. Unfortunately, the living standards for her and her family remain dire. They live in cramped clay brick accommodations, sleeping on straw mats laid atop a mud floor. Mama Duomme still struggles to cover the costs of her son’s school fees, plus rent, and her sons continue to lack a home that can facilitate proper learning and school activities, like homework.

Thacienne's resolve to ensure her children receive a proper education is truly inspiring and resonates deeply with my own values. Her unwavering commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty through education not only reflects her strength but also her profound understanding of its transformative power. By helping Thacienne, I am contributing to a brighter future not just for her children but also for the entire community. Education is a cornerstone for development and empowerment, and supporting her endeavor means fostering a generation equipped with knowledge and skills to make impactful changes. Thacienne’s determination is a beacon of hope and aiding her in this mission is a meaningful way to create lasting positive change.

The house they rent has an old roof that leaks when it rains, creating puddles everywhere.

Duomme befriended Inshuti's executive director, Rosa. It was his kindness, helpfulness and excitement to practice English that sparked Inshuti to look into housing this family.

Every item the family processes is broken or has been repaired. They struggle to obtain even basic necessities.
