for Pierre-Celestine
Pierre-Celestine’s story is marked by incredible hard work, sacrifice, and determination, all fueled by his deep commitment to providing for his family. He and his wife, Nyirababshyitsi, are both from Nyabihu District and married in 2007. At that time, they lived in an extremely rural area with almost no access to jobs or economic opportunities, leading to severe poverty.
In 2013, Pierre found work as a night watchman at a laboratory in Gisenyi city. Despite the distance and the grueling demands of the job, Pierre would travel back and forth daily to spend time with his family. His role as the sole breadwinner pushed him to endure long hours away from home, but his dedication never wavered. After four years, Pierre could finally move his family to Gisenyi in 2017.
Today, Pierre continues to work as a night watchman, earning 30,000 RWF per month, the equivalent of about $22. He works 12-hour night shifts, from 6 PM to 6 AM, with only one day off every two weeks. Despite the demanding schedule and minimal pay, Pierre has remained steadfast, doing whatever it takes to support his family. The rent for their home is 20,000 RWF, which leaves them with just 10,000 RWF, or roughly $7.5 a month, to cover the family’s other basic needs.
In an effort to create a better future, Pierre rented a plot of land and grew onions for two growing seasons, displaying his resourcefulness and entrepreneurial spirit. With the income from that venture, he was able to purchase a piece of land, laying the foundation for a more secure future.
Pierre Celestine's family
The resilience of Pierre and his family is truly extraordinary. Pierre’s tireless work ethic underscores his unwavering commitment to his family’s well-being. I firmly believe that those who work hard deserve to be rewarded. Despite the challenges they’ve faced, they have made the best of their situation. The family is large, and by helping them secure a permanent place to live, I’ll be supporting multiple generations, especially the children who are currently in school. There is no doubt that with a safe and stable environment, they will seize the opportunity and turn it into a foundation for growth, security, and prosperity. All they need is a little help to truly thrive and soar.

The children sleep together on a platform cushioned with dried bean stalks and have no blanket for warmth.
The house has an old roof that leaks when it rains, making the dirt floor muddy.
Nyirabashyitsi collects water and saves it until dry season and then sells it at a higher amount. This helps pay for the kids school supplies.
The family survives on very little and has few clothes or possessions.
Pierre-Celestine worries that the rising cost of food and goods will make it harder for him to pay rent.
